Mathematics

At Ashleigh, we believe that mathematics is an adventure. It is a journey where children (and adults!) are encouraged to explore, get creative, make mistakes, and ultimately conquer new challenges. We want every child to see themselves as a capable mathematician — someone who can reason, problem‑solve, and approach new ideas with confidence.

Our Approach

Power Maths (Years 1–6)

To support this vision, we use Power Maths, a UK curriculum mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement in every lesson. Power Maths:

- encourages children to explore number and reasoning in a range of ways and contexts

- promotes discussion, collaboration, and deep thinking

- builds confidence through carefully structured small steps

- is written by leading mastery experts and recommended by the Department for Education (DfE)

- is created in partnership with White Rose Maths, ensuring strong curriculum coherence and progression

Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS)

Fluency in number facts is essential for unlocking later maths, so we also use Times Tables Rock Stars, a highly engaging and carefully sequenced practice programme. TTRS is used regularly across the school, with a particular focus in Years 1–4, where children work towards rapid recall of multiplication and division facts. By Years 5 and 6, these facts are embedded, allowing them to tackle more complex concepts with ease.

What Maths Looks Like at Ashleigh

Across the school, maths lessons are:

- practical and interactive, using concrete and pictorial representations before moving to abstract methods

- inclusive — every child is given the support and challenge they need to achieve

- discussion‑rich, with children encouraged to explain, justify, and deepen their thinking

- carefully structured, following clear progression from year to year

Our books and classroom environments celebrate this journey. You will see:

- photographs of children exploring concepts

- examples of reasoning and problem‑solving

- high‑quality modelling and representations

- evidence of pride, progress, and growing mathematical resilience

Curriculum Overviews

Below, you will find year‑group curriculum maps giving full details of the maths content taught from Year 1 to Year 6, showing how concepts build over time.
