October - Ash 2

W/C 5th October

This week, the children have been learning about our five senses and how they help us to understand the world around us and keep ourselves safe. We have explored the senses of sight, hearing and touch, talking about how we use each sense every day and what life might be like without them.

To explore how sight helps us, the children enjoyed playing 'spot the difference' games and looking closely at zoomed-in photographs of familiar objects, using their observation skills to work out what the whole image might be. When learning about hearing, we listened to a variety of sound effects and shared our ideas about what could be making each sound. The children then used their listening skills to create and copy simple musical patterns for one another.

As part of our learning about touch, Mrs Lowe hid a range of objects inside the feely tubs. The children carefully described what they could feel using a growing range of vocabulary before making predictions about what the object might be. They also enjoyed making their own 'feely hand' with Miss Gamble, with each finger featuring a different texture to explore and compare.

The children have shown great curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the week, asking thoughtful questions and sharing their ideas confidently. It has been wonderful to see them investigating, exploring and discussing how their senses help them to make sense of the world around them.

We are looking forward to continuing our learning next week as we explore the senses of taste and smell

W/C 12th October

This week, we completed our learning about the five senses by exploring the senses of smell and taste.

We began by investigating our sense of smell, using our noses to identify a range of different scents including ginger, mint, lemon, vinegar and coffee. The children enjoyed making predictions, sharing their ideas and comparing their responses with their friends. Some smells were immediately recognisable, while others proved much trickier to identify!

We then explored our sense of taste through a tasting session where the children sampled a variety of foods, including ginger biscuits, crackers, grapes, sour sweets and marshmallows. We talked about the different flavours and discussed which foods we liked best, using vocabulary such as sweet, sour and crunchy to describe our experiences.

The sour sweets certainly caused some memorable reactions, and the children's "lemon faces" definitely deserve a photo gallery of their own!

There was lots of laughter as the children compared their expressions and shared their thoughts about each of the different foods.
