WB 2/2/26
This week, we began our brand-new geography topic: Climate Change. To start, we explored our planet and learned how different parts of the world can be grouped into biomes. We discussed how a biome is a large area of Earth with its own climate, plants, and animals — for example, deserts, rainforests, and tundras.
To help bring this learning to life, the children then created their own self‑sustaining biomes using recycled materials. Inside these mini habitats, they planted a variety of plant cuttings and beans.
Only a few days in, we are already spotting signs of the water cycle at work inside the containers. The children were excited to see condensation forming on the sides, showing that the water is evaporating and then condensing just like it does in nature.
We are very much looking forward to observing how the plants grow and change over the next few weeks — it’s going to be a fascinating study!

We ended this half term with a visit from Mrs Farr who set up an exciting orienteering course for us. The rain held off and we set off in groups around the school. In orienteering you use a map to find checkpoints, which are also called ‘controls’, and are normally in a set order. The checkpoints are orange and white kites. Mrs Farr gave us different maps of the school and we had to work out where the controls were and bring back the letter clues. Some of the controls were harder to find than others!

It was fantastic to welcome the children back after a half term break and to have had some sunshine this week! We have all enjoyed the extra spring it brings into our step and we are all feeling energised and ready for a very busy term ahead!
This week we finished our writing based on The Last Bear by Hannah Gold. The children have worked on making effective front covers for their sequel chapter and have published their writing. Everyone is very proud of what they have achieved. Take a look at our display and a few extracts from our writing.

"The fog urged me to head into the island. The dark grey ocean sprayed salty sea spray at my freezing face. The creeping fog wrapped itself around me, seeming more menacing than I remembered." - Archie
"As I walked, the wind became agitated with me - like I had done something wrong. The fog was so dense it looked like a blanket and felt like it was stalking me. It was as grey as the rocks. Gradually, the mist slowly and silently faded away, like curtains opening to let in the light" - Ari
"Without warning, the mist cleared and there it was - Bear Island. The island was the same but something felt different. Like a new spell wrapping around me; the chill of the frosty ground seeped through my sturdy walking boots and the biting cold slapped my face. I peered through the mist at the lone tree I used to climb - the spell had it's tight hold one me now." - Kane
