Dyslexia Friendly Classrooms at Ashleigh C of E Primary School, Barnstaple
At Ashleigh Primary School we have created classrooms which are designed to make learning a little easier for children with difficulties in literacy, including those with dyslexia.
Devon Count Council have acknowledged our efforts by awarding the school with a special award: The Inclusion Award for Dyslexia. This was awarded to the school in 2015, at the Enhanced (the highest possible) level.
We believe that making our classrooms dyslexia friendly is a logical process because we want to help dyslexic children as much as possible, and in doing so we believe we benefit all children.
Over a period of several years, we have undertaken training, run staff inset courses, consulted external experts and agencies. We have followed the recommendations of the government, the British Dyslexia Association, Devon County Educational Psychology Service and the Devon Dyslexia Strategy Group.
We have, during the last three years:
- undertaken extensive staff training
- consulted external experts and agencies
- audited, taken stock and planned for the future
We have taken all we have learned and attempted to put it into everyday practice, creating a school in which dyslexic pupils can thrive along with all of their peers.
As part of this process we have created a website. This website is part of our development as a dyslexia friendly school. It is primarily intended for parents: to provide useful information and helpful suggestions, and as a platform for people to air their views, ask questions and make suggestions.
